Guardian Air UV System
The PHI CELL by RGF Advanced Oxidation Systems is designed to help eliminate sick building syndrome risks by reducing odors, air pollutants, and cold and virus causing germs through a patent pending Photohydroionization® (PHI) process. The PHI Cells are easily mounted into existing air conditioning and heating systems. When the HVAC system is in operation, the PHI Cell uses an Advanced Oxidation Process to reduce the airborne contaminants.
Why use PhotoHydroIonization?
Germicidal UV light rays have been used for decades by the medical industry as a method for destroying microorganisms (germs, viruses, bacteria). UV light is dependable and can be easily installed in HVAC ducts or a plenum. Germicidal UV light is effective in reducing airborne microorganisms that pass through the light rays. However, germicidal UV light has little to no effect on gases, vapors or odors.
Ozone, on the other hand, is very effective on gases, vapors and odors. However, too much ozone can be a health hazard, and traditional methods of producing ozone (corona discharge) have maintenance problems and create nitric acid and nitric oxides. The combination of ozone (O3) and UV light in the presence of the PHI catalyst creates the Advanced Oxidation reaction. This patent pending reaction chamber both creates ozone gas and destroys it within the same chamber. This process in combination with the catalytic target surface of the cell produces not only an atmosphere in which germicidal light can kill micro-organisms. It also produces, super oxide ions and hydro-peroxides. These products of advanced oxidation reactions further attack the microorganisms as well as significantly reduce odors and VOC’s. The PHI reaction cell has the added benefit of producing safe low levels of ozone as a by-product to the PHI cell. This low level ozone further cleanses the air as it travels down the ductwork. By engineering the proper light wavelength and a dual function, no maintenance PHI Cell, RGF has effectively designed a system that will not exceed the recommended Federal safety limits for ozone (0.04 ppm) in an occupied room.
With the RGF PHI CELL, most gases and odors are abated while micro-organisms can be reduced by as much as 90%, and the room will have safe low ozone levels no greater than forest air or air after a thunderstorm, which will give the room fresh, clean and odor-free air.

PHI Technology vs. UV alone The combination of UV light enhanced by a hydrated quad-metallic compound target develops an advanced oxidation reaction. This process produces hydro-peroxides, super oxide ions, ozonide ions and hydroxides. By engineering the proper UV light wavelength, in combination with a triple function, no maintenance unit, The PHI Cell provides safe hydro-peroxides, super oxide ions, ozonide ions and hydroxides to purify the air. With the RGF HVAC-PHI Cell Advanced Oxidation System, micro-organisms can be reduced by over 97%. Gases, VOCs and odors can also be reduced significantly. Advanced oxidizers will be carried throughout the ducts and rooms for a continuous purification process and a quick kill of newly introduced odors or microbials. This is far superior to UV alone. In addition the PHI Cell has a protective poly coating to prevent mercury contamination in case of lamp breakage. UV-C - Germicidal Lamps These are rapidly becoming very popular as an easy fix for the air conditioner coil mold problem. This is one of the most prevalent cause of the mildew smell you get when you enter an air-conditioned sick building. UV-C (254nm) lamps are basically similar to sun lamps and are typically only effective on microbials that pass by within a few inches of the lamp or areas where the light is shining directly on for extended periods of time, such as the air conditioner coil

The RGF PHI Advantage While UV systems are designed to kill mold on the HVAC coil, the PHI Cell does this, plus it adds advanced oxidants throughout the room to kill microbials at the source.
